Buddhism at Tara Buddhist Center

Exploring the Tibetan Gelug tradition of Lama Tsongkhapa — a path of compassion, mindfulness, and understanding the mind.

Our Tradition

Tara Buddhist Center follows the Tibetan Gelug tradition of Lama Tsongkhapa, the same lineage as His Holiness the Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyatso. This tradition emphasizes rigorous study, ethical discipline, and the cultivation of compassion as the foundation of spiritual practice.

At the heart of the Gelug approach is the understanding that happiness and suffering depend on the mind. When we study Buddhism, we study ourselves — learning about the nature of our own minds and discovering that peace and happiness are found within.

The Tara Buddhist Center welcomes everyone who wishes to cultivate a healthier, more compassionate way of being. You need not identify as a Buddhist to find a home here; a sincere wish to become a warmer, more loving, and kindhearted person is enough. The teachings offered explore the nature of our own minds, recognizing that both happiness and suffering arise from within. By studying Buddhism, we ultimately study ourselves, uncovering the inner peace that has always been present. This path is open to all who seek genuine transformation and a deeper connection to their own innate goodness.

At the heart of the Tibetan Gelug tradition is the understanding that rigorous study and ethical discipline naturally lead to the cultivation of compassion. This same lineage, shared with His Holiness the Dalai Lama, emphasizes that the mind is the source of both happiness and suffering. When we turn our attention inward and learn about the workings of our own consciousness, we discover that lasting peace is not found in external circumstances but within ourselves. Each class and gathering offers an opportunity to deepen this self-understanding and to develop the kind of warm, open heart that benefits all beings.

Compassion is not merely an abstract ideal but a living practice that can be cultivated day by day. The center provides a supportive community where individuals can learn to extend kindness to themselves and to others, including friends, guests, and all sentient beings. Through shared study and meditation, participants discover that a compassionate heart is the foundation of genuine happiness. The path is one of gentle self-discovery, where each step toward greater awareness and loving-kindness brings us closer to the peace we seek. Everyone is invited to explore this journey at their own pace.

Core Teachings

Compassion

Compassion lies at the center of the Buddhist path. The Gelug tradition teaches that genuine compassion — the wish for all beings to be free from suffering — is both the motivation and the fruit of spiritual practice. Cultivating compassion transforms how we relate to ourselves and others.

Mindfulness & the Mind

Buddhist practice trains us to observe the mind with clarity and kindness. By understanding how thoughts and emotions arise, we learn to respond with wisdom rather than react from habit. This inner work is the key to lasting peace and well-being.

A Welcoming Path

You don't need to be a Buddhist to benefit from these teachings. Anyone with a wish to be a healthy, compassionate, warm, and kindhearted person is welcome. Come to Tara Buddhist Center as our guest and leave as our spiritual friend.
